49ers All-Time Running Back

The re-vote on the #2 wide receiver has resulted in an even bigger percentage lead for John Taylor. The ballot will remain open, but I think we’ve reached a point where we can call it for JT. Today we move on to another offensive position, running back. Last go-around Roger Craig ran away with the race, even over a Hall of Famer like Hugh McElhenny. Given the apparent age of many of our readers, it’s not too surprising that even Frank Gore finished with more votes than McElhenny.

When we had the first vote on running back I made a point to mention a couple of things: First, Joe Perry is in the fullback balloting, even though he is currently the franchise leader in career rushing yards. The offense ran a bit differently back in those days, but for simplicity’s sake, I went with him at fullback. Second, Frank Gore is still a youngster, but I felt he has done enough in is brief career to merit recognition on the ballot. I have to admit, I was heartbroken though that I held off Kevan Barlow. I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive myself.

Roger Craig (1983-1990): Not a whole lot needs to be said about the man who is #2 in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, #3 in receptions and #9 in receiving yards. Before Marshall Faulk, there was Roger Craig. In 1985, Craig became the first running back to finished with 1,000 rushing AND receiving yards. The previous season he became the first player ever to score three touchdowns in a Super Bowl. Roger Craig went to 4 Pro Bowls and was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1988 as he finished with 2,036 total yards. Craig still stands as the only running back to ever lead the NFL in receptions in a season. He finished his career with 13,143 total yards and 73 total touchdowns.

Hugh McElhenny (1952-1960): McElhenny was the 49ers first round pick in 1952 and was immediately a hit on the field. He won Rookie of the Year, along with back to back Pro Bowl and 1st Team All Pro appearances his first two seasons. Over the course of his career, McElhenny went to six Pro Bowls and finished his 49ers career with 4,288 rushing yards, 2,666 receiving yards and 50 total touchdowns.

Garrison Hearst (1997-2003): I don’t know of anybody who doesn’t like Garrison Hearst. One big reason is this short little run. Hearst finished his time with the 49ers with 5,535 rushing yards. That number would have likely been quite a bit higher if not for the nasty broken ankle he suffered against Atlanta on the first play from scrimmage in the Divisional playoffs. He developed the necrosis condition that led to Bo Jackson’s retirement and seemed finished, although the 49ers kept him on the roster. Two years later, Hearst came back and rushed for 1,206 yards, winning his second Comeback Player of the Year award. The next two years saw him slowly phased out of the offense, replaced by the immortal Kevan Barlow.

Frank Gore (2005-present): Gore has only been a 49er for three years, a starting running back for two of them. In that time he has set the 49ers single season rushing record and twice led the team in receptions. Gore currently stands #10 in the 49ers all-time rushing list. Considering he’s 5,284 yards out of first place and signed for the next four seasons, Gore could definitely get within striking distance of the #1 spot. I’m guessing he won’t reach Roger Craig’s receptions by a running back number, but considering how active he is in the passing game (particularly now with the addition of Mike Martz), Gore could finish his career challenging Roger Craig as the best running back in team history.
<fieldset class=”poll-box”> <legend>Poll</legend>
Who should be our All-Time Running Back?

<form action=”/polls/vote/44778?container_id=poll_container_44778_135844497″ method=”post” onsubmit=”new Ajax.Request(’/polls/vote/44778?container_id=poll_container_44778_135844497′, {asynchronous:true, evalScripts:true, parameters:Form.serialize(this)}); NFC West Position-by-Position: Guards

Up to this point we’ve discussed quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, centers and offensive tackles. Today we round out the offensive line with a look at all the guards in the division. Guard is not the easiest position to grade on the offensive line as it is just sort smushed in between the other offensive linemen. However, as I indicate in my write-up on the 49ers guards, I think the 49ers are in an excellent position for 2009. If they let Dave Baas go after this season as a free agent things may change going forward. However, these posts are about the team’s status at each position in 2009. And in 2009, the potential and production at guard is looking good. The rankings list the 49ers third, but I think the top three teams in the division are actually bunched fairly close together.

1. St.

by Dan GrazianoFiled under: Lions, FanHouse ExclusiveThe Detroit Lions, who haven’t won a football game since 2007, just wrapped up their final minicamp of the offseason. There’s a lot that’s new about them, including offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who was good enough to return FanHouse’s phone call on Thursday afternoon and answer some questions about the way the team looks to him so far.Linehan, the former head coach of the St.

Today in Philly Sports History: McNabb Announced as Chunky Spokesperson, 2001

By the summer 2001, Donovan McNabb was already quite a success. He had just been to his first Pro Bowl, he had led the Eagles to their first playoff victory of the new millennium, and he was a season away from getting signed to a 12 year, $115 million contract as his team's new franchise player. But as everyone and their mother knows, you're not a true star in this league until the first time you shill for canned goods.

Forgetting Brandon Marshall

Ok, so I have to admit, I only used that title because Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a hilarious movie. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it. It may not seem that great, but its one of those movies that only gets better the more you see it. Paul Rudd, per usual, is great and Mila Kunis also looks pretty doggone good. Of course, I probably over exaggerated how good Kunis actually looked when I first saw the movie because I was overseas and had not seen a good looking female in the flesh for months on end. Anyways … Onto some football stuff. I went and played poker at a little place down in Fishers and for a few minutes the conversation turned to football. I was sitting at a table with a Bears fan and so I asked his thoughts on Brandon Marshall. He said he was in favor of a move for the Denver wide receiver, but saidhe didn’t think it would happen. I’m in favor of the move and said, ”why not?” They already went and got the stud quarterback in Jay Cutler, why not get the stud receiver? It’s kind of like going to a five star restaurant, getting the $ 21 appetizer, a bottle of classy wine, the $58 steak and then passing on dessert. It just doesn’t make much sense. Marshall is familiar with Cutler and his cannon arm and immediately gives the Bears a legit number one. I think it’s a good move
